The Traditional Holiday Favorite Before New Mexico was new, maize was a sacred crop for the Aztecs and inhabitants of Mesoamerica. Pozole was prepared on special occasions and mentioned in the journals of Spanish missionaries. The dish is is named from a Nahuatl word meaning foamy. Ask any Burqueño (a native to Albuquerque) where to see an impressive display of luminarias, they would tell you to visit Old Town plaza on Christmas Eve. The historic plaza along Route 66 dates to 1706 for the establishment of the city. On Wednesday, hundreds of paper bags with lit candles will be set along streets and pathways – a long tradition of the Southwest to light the way for the Christ child. Small Business SupportAt many small businesses this year, you might be shocked to see patrons and staff exchanging $2 bills at the counter. If you look a little closer, you might even see our stamp on these bills!Sometimes called the "2 Dollar Challenge", this initiative is a joint effort with our local economy.
